BMI -A Key Indicator of Health

Body Mass Index serves as one of the simplest, yet powerful tools that give an estimation of the weight of a person in proportion to height. This is mostly expressed in terms of a person’s weight in kilograms divided by height expressed in meters, squared. BMI is widely used by healthcare professionals to group individuals into categories of weight status: underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. These categories help in identifying potential health risks associated with different weight levels.

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 represents the normal weight for most adults. If your BMI is less than 18.5, you are probably underweight. This puts one at a potentially high risk for malnutrition, osteoporosis, or other health-related diseases. On the other hand, a BMI of 25-29.9 means a person is overweight, while a BMI of 30 or more refers to obesity; both are directly related to very high risks for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.
